The 4A Maryland State Semi-final match up between Bethesda Chevy-Chase and DuVal was an epic overtime thriller. The Barons rallied a win after forward Yannick Alexis rebounded the blocked shot of teammate, Kevin Holston, and kissed the glass with a putback that dropped through the net for a one point win 58-57.
Barons guard Kevin Holston showed great poise after receiving his fourth foul in the third quarter. Holston led his team with a game high 21 pts and 3 steals and he also kept his fire lit, scoring crucial buckets, whether it be a drive or trey ball which he was 4-7 from deep.
DuVal came into the game on a good note after defeating a Henry Wise team 55-46 who swept the Tigers in the regular season. The Tigers had a chance to negate overtime when star big man, Edward Polite, missed crucial free throws. Polite redeemed himself in overtime knocking down, what at the time was the potential game winning free throws, until the Barons responded at the buzzer.
Edward led his team with 15 pts, 11 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Bethesda advances to the finals championship to face high octane Meade Mustangs. The Barons, in my colleague and I opinion, will have to play the best game of their lives. Bethesda also will have to defend and show ability to break the press of the Mustangs.
