Earlier this season, Poly Lady Engineers defeated the Lady Huskies of Patterson Mills, 41-34, in the Beast of the East Tournament back in December. Rightfully so, redemption was on the mind of the Lady Huskies. Mills revenged one of their 3 losses with a 51-40 victory in the opening game of the 19th annual Basketball Academy mixer.
Both teams started off sloppy in the first quarter, Mills committing 3 turnovers in the first 46 seconds but Poly couldn't turn it into points, going 0-5 from the field and 0-2 from the line. Mills eventually began to put the ball in the basket while Poly continued to struggle. Poly didn't score their first bucket until 1:20 minute mark, finishing the quarter 1-14.
By halftime the Lady Huskies built a 16 point lead, 27-11, all on the back of senior forward Qalea Ismail. Lady Huskies went on a 11-0 run in the final minutes of the 2nd quarter, Ismail responsible for 7 of those points. She finished the game with 12 points and was a strong presence in the paint on both ends. Point Guard, Kaley Thompson, also was a big contributor with her strong play in the backcourt, also finishing with 12 points.
Poly attempted to make a push in the final quarter, switching to a full court press that helped create a 7-2 run in the first 2 minutes of the quarter. Poly guard, Khepera Stokes, did her very best to mount a major comeback for her squad, being very active on the defensive end. She led all Poly scorers with 15, 9 of which coming in the 4th quarter. Poly cut the lead down to 7, but Ismail and Thompson combined for a 6-0 run to close out the game.
