The Marlins are off to a semi-respectable 10-11 start. Although under .500, many expected the Marlins to be a disaster this season and so far they are better than people thought. The Marlins are currently on a 5-game win streak and are feeling confident. However, the expectation of disaster may now be realized as the team has received word that Dee Gordon has been suspended 80 games for testing positive for a PED in his system.
Gordon will lose about $1.65 million for the positive drug test and his reputation will be marred by this test.
No question that this is a crushing blow for the Marlins as Gordon is a year removed from winning the National League batting title in 2015 and the Marlins are in need of his offense. The Marlins are currently 21st in runs per game 3.76. While Gordon was not setting the world on fire so far in 2016, he was still productive; hitting .266 with 5 RBIs and 13 total runs. In addition to that, his speed is an assets the Marlins would love to have in front of power hitter, Giancarlo Stanton.
The point is quality baseball players like Gordon do not come out of the sky. With this news, experts has now completely written off the Marlins chances for an success, despite their recent hot streak. It will be interesting to see the domino effect Gordon's suspension will have on the team this season.
This is the second major leaguer to suffer a PED suspension in as many weeks. Jays 1st basemen Chris Colabello also suffered the same fate for a positive PED test. In a one on one interview with Jamie Campbell, Colabello was very vocal and emotional pleading his case.
This opens up the discussion of whether or not Gordon will go the route of Colabello and not take the suspension lying down. If not, expect a couple very interesting weeks where players are critical of the drug testing system in the MLB. Regardless, this has severely crippled the Marlins season and possibly Gordon's long term future.
