The Gonzaga Bulldogs won their 28th game of the season, defeating rival St. Mary's Gaels, 70-60, in a very impressive comeback victory. This is the Bulldogs 8th straight victory over the Gaels.
Zaga didn't claim their first lead of the game until the 3:37 mark in the 2nd half. The Gaels came out striking early, building a 30-15 lead in the first half, Patty Mills Night. The Gaels went 7-12 from behind the trey line in the first half, which helped them build that early lead. Aaron Bright and Brad Waldrow were the only two players to score in double figures for the Gaels, combining for 36 points, Waldow also finished with 11 boards.
The Bulldogs didn't make their run until late in the game. In the final 5 minutes of the game, the Bulldogs outscored the Gaels 19-4, scoring the final 12 points of the game, while the Gaels went scoreless in the final 3 minutes. Kyle Wiltjer was big on that final stretch scoring 8 points, snatching a couple boards, and 2 blocks in the final minute. Wiltjer finished with 16, while Kevin Pagos and Przemek Karnowski both scored 16.
Zaga has an opportunity to be a number 1 seed as long as they run the table, including the West Coast Conference Tournament. Last time the Zags had a #1 seed was in 2013 but they lost to Wichita State in the second round. We all know that a #1 seed does not guarantees a trip to the Final Four but it is a good accomplishment for ones team. Let's see if the Zags can run the table.
