The New York Yankees stumbled out of the playoffs, receiving some bad news before their AL wild card matchup with the Astros.
Not only did the Yankees lose to the Astros 3-0, but they learned that their pitcher, CC Sabathia, announced that he was checking himself into an Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre, just days before their big game.
Sabathia said in a statement "I love baseball and I love my teammates like brothers, and I am also fully aware that I am leaving at a time when we should all be coming together for one last push towards the world series," Sabathia then went on to say "It hurts me deeply to do this now, but I owe it to myself and my family to get myself right. I want to take control of my disease, and I want to be a better man, father and player."
The thing that should be emphasized is that often times, we as fans, forget that athletes are human beings with human problems. For CC Sabathia to say he has a problem and needs help, especially at a time like this, is extremely brave.
Hopefully Sabathia can get the help he needs, and sometime down the road, he can play baseball next season.
Not everyone in the blogger/journalist community were saying these affirmative things. In fact, I personally saw a headline that read "Yankees Pitcher had such a poor season he just checked himself into Rehab." This headline in particular pissed me off and this is why journalists and bloggers receive bad rep from players.
Fan-I Sports would like to wish CC Sabathia all the best in his recovery.
This is a sports website and thus we do have to talk about the sports ramifications to CC Sabathia's decision.
This is a huge loss from a sporting perspective to the Yankees, who were already having issues with depth when it comes to starting pitching. Alcoholism is not like a typical sports injury where there is a timeline ￢ﾀﾓ leaving the possibility open for Sabathia to call it a career.
Despite CC Sabathia having a bad season, he was seemingly turning a corner recently when it comes to his performance on the field.
In his last 5 stats, Sabathia allowed more than 1 run once. He also reached the 6th inning on all 5 starts. Not to mention that CC Sabathia has been known to be a leader in the clubhouse for the team as well. This was a huge blow for the Yankees from both a pitching and leadership standpoint going into the off-season, but it is for the best as CC Sabathia can now focus on dealing with his disease.
