The Arizona Wildcats are having their best season ever, so far. Of course their best season came back in 1997 when they took home the National Championship but that championship squad that included Mike Bibby and Jason Terry did not start off 21-0. The Wildcats defeated conference for Stanford 60-57, giving them their best start in school history. The school formally known as "Point Guard U" has another great PG to add to the school list in junior Nick Johnson. Johnson scored 16 points, 3 of which came during the final minute to give the Wildcats a 58-55 lead then hit 2 free throws to seal the deal. Johnson has been playing on a POY level, averaging 16 points on the year. Even though he is the best player on team, he might not be the most popular.
Freshman sensation, Aaron Gordan, has not disappointed and being one of the stars of this great freshman class. Unlike Parker at Duke and Wiggins at Kansas, Gordan is not the main peice to the puzzle but he is still a major factor in the squad. The Wildcats are very consistent and have 3 to 4 players that could carry the load any given night but they play great defense. Against Stanford, they forced the Cardinals to go scoreless for a 10 minute stretch in the 2nd half. I think their defense is the best component if their team because they are very athletic at all 5 postitions. Offensively, I think they are above average at best. They can get buckets when needed but if an high powered offensive team can get their buckets off, I think they will have trouble keeping up. This is not a team that will last in a shoot out, at least I don't think they can, but in 21 games no one scored more points than them.
